We believe that privacy is both inconsequential and unimportant to you. If it were not, you wouldn't use Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Google or LinkedIn: and you certainly wouldn't get an amateur radio license with your address in a public database. Would you?

Introduction

We only collect Personal Data as volunteered by yourself (End User) throughout your visitation on this website. You will not disclose Personal Data if you never register or log in.

We will also ask for consent for data processing where appropriate and will inform you of how we intend to manage it and what measures we will take to ensure its security.

We will never sell your data to another party. We will not use this Personal Data for other purposes without asking your permission. We will not keep this information for longer than necessary. You may delete your account and all comments at any time. Security of Personal Data

Data security, computer security, and software security is extremely important to Elmers News. No transmission on any data network, or form of electronic storage is 100% secure. We take reasonable steps to protect your Personal Data, but cannot make any guarantee (written or implied) due to the evolving complexity of foreign attack vectors.

Password Security Policy
  • We never store your password at rest. We store a derivative of a password called a salted hash and compare that in memory to what is transmitted when you sign in.
  • We require HTTPS on pages where your password is required. This will encrypt your password in transit on computer networks.
  • Center for Internet Security warns you to NEVER use the same password on multiple sites, and if you follow this advice you will seriously reduce your risk to identity theft.

Data Collection

Personal Data

To operate this website (Service), we must retain Personal Data you provide us.

  • Amateur Radio Call Signs
  • E-mail Address (Never displayed to non-admin users.)
  • First Name (Given) / Last Name (Surname)
  • Cookies, IP addresses, site browsing habits.
  • Any profile, story, image, comment, text or content you transmit to our servers through usage of Service.
  • Country of origin for callsigns.
  • Authoritative radio license registry data. (Read: Radio License Database Dumps)
Site Usage Data

We may also collect information how the Service is accessed and used (Usage Data). This includes the items you upvote or downvote, articles, submissions, contents, and messages. This is to provide core features to our website and track trending activity.

Some of your site usage data is even public data, in the mod log which contains user actions, edits, posts or other metadata. None of the data in the mod log is personally revealing beyond your callsign, unless self revealed by submsision activity.

Log Data

We may collect information that your web browser sends whenever you visit our website ("Log Data"). This Log Data may include information such as your computer's Internet Protocol ("IP") address, browser type, browser version, the pages of our website that you visit, the time and date of your visit, the time spent on those pages and other statistics.

In addition, we may use third party services like Google Analytics and Pingdom that collect, monitor and analyze this type of information in order to increase our website's functionality. These third party service providers have their own privacy policies addressing how they use such information.

Radio License Database Dumps

In addition to your callsign, we may import, collect and store a partial or complete radio license database dump. The data will be downloaded from public sources from authoritative registries. This data is not limited to, but usually contains: callsigns, addresses, names, locations, awards, status, license class, dates [licensed, updated, effective, expired], record identifiers. We might share this data in your profile to licensed members, but will never share registry data beyond callsign with the public without your opt-in.

Cookies

The session cookie is a strongly encrypted value with no Personal Data. To participate as a reader only, cookies can be disabled.

Our cookie elmersnews_production consists of a unique random number that our server generates (hashes) and hands back to your browser. As you move from page to page within Elmers News site, we are able to verify your login identity without asking you to re-submit your password each time.

Google Analytics one of our Service Provider's may require cookie(s)

E-Mail Privacy

  • We will never share your E-Mail with any third party. Only moderators see it.
  • E-Mails are collected for the purposes of login and site notifications, which you can opt out of any time.

Data Retention

Elmers.news will retain your Personal Data only for as long as is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy. We will retain and use your Personal Data to the extent necessary to comply with our legal obligations (for example, if we are legally obligated to retain data to comply with applicable laws), resolve disputes, and enforce our legal agreements and policies.

Account Delete

You can delete your account which deletes your password hash and profile, but retains some Personal Data for re-activation. When you delete your account, you can optionally anonymize your comments as inactive-user or your callsign will remain tribute.

You can re-activate your account any time.

Data Transfer

Your information, including Personal Data, may be transferred to — and maintained on — computers located outside of your state, province, country or other governmental jurisdiction where the data protection laws may differ than those from your jurisdiction.

Elmers.news will also retain Usage Data for internal analysis purposes. Usage Data is generally retained for a shorter period of time, except when this data is used to strengthen the security or to improve the functionality of our Service, or we are legally obligated to retain this data for longer time periods.

If you are located outside United States and choose to provide information to us, please note that you are sending data, including Personal Data, to the United States. Your data is stored on disk and RAM in the USA. If this concerns you, please stay away.

Service Providers

We may employ third party companies and individuals to facilitate our Service (“Service Providers”), to provide the Service on our behalf, to perform Service-related services or to assist us in analyzing how our Service is used. Childrens Privacy

We do not store Personal Data for anyone under the age of 13 to our best knowledge. We do not offer service or membership to anyone under the age of 13 (Children.).
If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your Child has provided us Personal Data, please contact us. If we become aware that we have collected Personal Data from children without parental consent, we will delete that data from our database. This is in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA) in Title 15 U.S.C. sections 6501–6505.
